911: Police Chief Said He Accidentally Shot Wife PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. (AP) — Investigators say a police chief in Georgia reported that he accidentally shot his wife early New Year's Day. Her condition is unclear, and no charges have been filed.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Sherry Lang says Peachtree City police Chief William McCollom called 911 around 4:15 a.m. Thursday, reporting that he accidentally shot his wife. Lang says the initial report was that the chief had shot Margaret McCollom twice, but the investigation later showed she was shot once.
Officials say he used his service weapon, a Glock handgun.
Lang said Thursday afternoon at a news conference that the chief was being cooperative and had been interviewed. His wife had not.
Earlier, officials said Margaret McCollom was in critical condition. But Lang wouldn't comment on her condition.
McCollom is on administrative leave pending the investigation and an internal review.
Peachtree City is about 30 miles southwest of Atlanta.
