Republicans Plot To Shatter 'Obama Coalition' In 2016

ATLANTA (AP) — They took a shellacking in the November midterm elections. But many Democrats remain confident that the 2016 presidential landscape still tilts in their favor.

Republicans, meanwhile, are out to disprove the idea of an enduring "Obama coalition."

Democrats start the election cycle having won a core group of states worth 242 electoral votes in every presidential election since 1992. That's just 28 shy of a winning majority.

But Republicans are looking to hold their increasing advantage among white voters, while denying Democrats' the same overwhelming margins among non-whites that Obama got in his two victories.

Republicans must reclaim Florida to have any shot at a 2016 victory. Plus they'd need a near sweep among six other states Obama won twice: Ohio, Virginia, Wisconsin, Colorado, Iowa and New Hampshire.
